It's all just a marketing ploy, money grab....
Good media NO DOUBT, but don’t believe the HYPE of Nitrate reduction. I've tried them all for extended periods(Substrat Pro, Matrix, Matrix Pond, Cermedia, and many more etc, etc), and that aspect does not work at a high enough level to be practical/cost efficient.
Great for standard nitrification, however I've found MOST even generic media's are fine unless you are EXTREMELY EXTREMELY overstocked. I truly do NOT see any difference(or enough difference to justify the costs) in ANY of the brands I have used(even nylon pot scrubbers), just BEING HONEST. Let this statement save you money I wasted over the years.....
At that point though, its not always about nitrification but MORE about NITRATE EXPORT from all the nitrate being produced by the BB on these or ANY other effective bio media, for which only water changes make a difference unless you have a really good DRIP system, which is still WATER CHANGES.
Oh yeah, and if your Pot scrubbers are collecting to much detritus, you may need to prefilter a little more effectively. In addition, the biofilm will have to be rinsed off of a quarter % of whatever media you are using occasionally anyway, just try to use either used tank water or at least dechlorinated fresh water (unless for marine aquarium)

I gotta agree with this. I messed with a bunch of different nitrare reduction methods and the most successful was a length of 4 inch pvc crammed full of purogin issue was recharging all of that.ourigen was a huge p.i.t.a
I was able to get a denitrate (anaerobic bb) filter to worker for a short time but that crapped out too.
What about Seachem Denitrate, Matrix or Pond Matrix? They supposedly colonize anaerobic bacteria for nitrate reduction, but never need to be recharged like Purigen. Have you tried any of them?
Marine Pure, Bio home, and Sera Siporax all claim the same denitrification qualities as well. They may in fact reduce nitrates, but not enough that you'd see it with an at home test without an elaborate dedicated filtration setup.
I was using matrix and it did work for a very short time. I'm no expert on this subject mom but I think the issue is I wasn't carbon dosing or feeding the bb. Some use vodka bwlubel it or not lol.
It was a group effort and to my knowledge on mark has shown long-term success with his algae scrubber
