Hi,

I had posted questions regarding sexing dovii in my precious thread. An update on that - I have finally decided to skip buying a dovii because I don't have space for a 200+ gallon tank.

So now I'm finally buying a 120 and planning to stock it with a pair of Nandopsis Haitienesis (Black Nasty). I checked out a few videos and have fallen in love with this fish. Andy Woods JCB is such an amazing specimen.

My LFS is selling 3inch nasties at 1650 INR/per fish. That's about $25 per fish.

What I wanted to know was the growth rate and the diet. Does anyone have any experience keeping nasties? How big do you think they will get in about a year from their current 3inch?

Any help is as always appreciated!

Thanks for tagging Jhay3513 Jhay3513 & Andy woods cichlids uk Andy woods cichlids uk .

I did some research on their diet. It looks like i should be feeding them a veggie diet otherwise they might have bloat issues. Is that a true statement?

With clean water, enough space and proper diet, it is safe to expect about 0.75-1 inch growth per month like most other large cichlids?

I wish I could help you more than tagging other people that can help you. One of them will chime in soon I'm sure

I have raised many haitiensus, but killed my first group, because I didn't keep them warm enough. The waters they come from, especially when young average mid to high eighties F,
Oh, Island in the Sun. The Dominican Republic by Alf Stalsberg ...
I also found (even as youngsters they can be quite lethal with each other, so getting a group, and separating them with dividers, helps, until two pair up.
Once a pair, and they are mature, temps can be relaxed a bit (a few degrees), but I would consider a 120 to be minimum for a pair, and "no" other tank mates.
My pair made my 150 gal look tiny.

The male hit 15" in less than two years, females hit 10" in about the same time

I believe if water is too cool, they have a hard time digesting protein, and become prone to bacterial digestive maladies like bloat, so warm water and a balanced diet help.
I used NLS Algaemax as a stale pellet.

Hey I literally followed duanes duanes car instructions and read the field reports that he posted as well. Growth has been relatively slow for me but my male is beefing up and eating more protein. If yours are already 3” I wouldn’t worry too much about diet as long as you keep them with minimal stress and clean water. I’ve had mine just over a year and they were about .5” when i got them. He’s at about 4” now my aquarium stays at 84-86°F. I feed once per day and twice per day here and there. They are absolutely ruthless with other nasties even at 1-2” mine were getting bullied but others. Let me know if you have any additional questions

Thanks duanes duanes and Jhay3513 Jhay3513 for your inputs.

I live in India, so the temperatures never drop to sub-zero. The minimum we get here in the winter months is around 14 degrees Celsius. Anyhow, I always have heaters heating all my tanks at all times. I will keep in mind your instructions and maintain temperatures.

I plan to buy about 4 nasties and hope that 2 of them will pair up. I want this 120 to be just a Nasty tank so I will not be adding any other fish to it.

Regarding diet, I tried looking up for NLS Algaemax on Amazon & it looks like they don't sell that stuff in India. I also tried to look for Ken's spirulina flakes and the only thing I could find was Ocean Nutrition Spirulina flakes & Taiyo Spirulina flakes.

Can I feed the nasties a mix of hikari pellets and ocean nutrition spirulina with an occasional feeding of market prawns? Please advise.

Regarding substrate, I was planning to go barebottom with some lava rocks for some bio-filtration. Is that a good idea? I'm assuming driftwood is a no-no? True statement?

I could never get mine to accept Hikari. The spirulina flakes should be fine. I’ve fed mine fresh scallops, peas, shrimp, fish, etc.
