New acharas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks but I am not a hero :) I don't want to be the nay teller. We all started somewhere and most of us with smaller tanks than your 180.

[1] If we are really talking a year and/or
[2] if you have a back up plan (someone lined up to take your fish if you find you cannot adequately house them any longer),

then I think you could try it. Make a thread on MFK on the fish and come back regularly with info, updates, and visuals. It'll be a nice thread, if you report honestly and earnestly your observations and experience.

But remember the two conditions I propose you should commit to if going that route.

HAHA, you really shouldn't have scared your wife like this. Remember steps! Don't make sudden grandiose moves, like 4000 gal tomorrow. If you creep up to such gallonage and get her to enjoy or at least not mind your hobby, it will happen.
Great wisdom Sir. Thank you. I will try to do a thread, I am still bumbling my way through how to use this site lol. Not sure where I would post a thread like that? Any suggestions?

At this point she appreciates the fish and because of her most of my main tank all have names. Ie the acharas are 2 different sizes so I assumed they are male and female. The smaller I will call the female has a crooked lip looking like it had a stroke or something so I named it jean after jean cretian an old prime minister, who had a crooked lip. And the other is billy in homage to Michael Jackson.

I have talked to her about building tanks, starting small and working my way up as I get some experience. This way I can get new tanks then sell them off as a fun side project. The 4K gal is the dream tank for maybe 5-10 yrs from now.

I'd post it in this forum where we are at, the "Catfish" forum. Or rather, why not continue on with this thread? I think it'd be the best. Many prefer to post a new thread for almost every time they have something to report, even if on the same fish. I hold the opposite view. You can add photos via the "Upload a File" grey button below the text window and share videos via a YouTube link.

Sexing Leiarius marmoratus appears to be unknown (from external features alone) https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=245 Having kept many of them over a decade, I think what is said about catfish in general applies to acharas: when adults, the females are notably bigger in circumference and are of the same or greater length than males.

Beware that selling large fish tanks is a niche market. It's not a commodity and a very small % of the population, tiny really, would be interested, have the space, and the money to be on the market for one. It appears to most fish hobbyists 120 gal is an enormous tank.

I remember when I got my 100 and thought it was huge now I think of it as too small

Hey Sir once again thank you for the wisdom. I think I would even like to do a new thread and possibly even a profile for all my current fish, just to have fun with it. (Kinda nervous that people will judge my tank as it is clearly overstocked) I have a plan and I think that will be the fun part about it. It seems like a whole adventure to me right now.

I am honestly not expecting to legitimately sex my fish out side of typical sexual dimorphisms. Just want to give them fun names according to how I see them (My wife's inspiration). Thank you for the tips though.

Also great tips about the niche market. If I am being honest with myself it is just an excuse to have another tank or two, get it set up then possibly sell it for a decent price to friends or on kijiji, nothing too extensive. Just a fun part to add to the hobby.

Ok so it has been almost a week now and the cats are still super shy. One resides under a huge piece of driftwood and the other in a rock cave I made large enough I can see who ever is inside. So far my wife saw one of them do a lap around the tank but I still haven't seen any movement outside of typical fluttering.

I want to give them some time and let them have their space. As I previously mentioned I bought them at an auction and they would have been extremely stressed from being in a bag most of the day. I feel like I bought them after misreading an old post from about 3 years ago on this site. If I am able to I would like to do my best to give them a great home for as long as possible. I played with the idea of returning them at first but have decided to own it and try to make their stay a welcome one.

I added a smaller sized fluorescent light to simulate the sun going down before bedtime to try and encourage them to come out of hiding. So far no success with the cats but my clown loaches are becoming more social after a 2 week dead period of not seeing them at all. I may have to move the cl's out of the 180 though because of their slow growth.

I will try to update this once there is something to report. Ttyl.

I'm happy to report that billy came out for a swim and a bite to eat today. But unfortunately it looks like Ich is breaking out in my tank . Is salt the best to treat it? I have read that lots of ich meds don't work well. Any suggestions?....
