thanks everyone for responding. Glad it's just a rookie job and not an immediate emergency.
With GE1 vs. aquarium sealant: glad other people have used GE1 before too. I saw that used on a DIY vid, so that's why I selected it. It does say "do not use for aquariums" on the bottle though. If not GE 1, what do you guys use to seal tanks? Or do you have it professionally done?
Polyaddict86: how long did you have your tank before it started leaking?
pops :I did clean the tank with acetone before caulking. However, when I was caulking, the silicone dried really fast. because it looked like some spots were not right, I went over it a little bit after a min or two. That could be the reason for the clumping or parts of the seal being a little elevated. My reason for the re-seal was because the tank is from 1981 and the seal was peeling. I've heard tanks should be resealed every 10 years. Is this true or false?
xraycer : your tank looks good man. I did not cut the glass bracing, just removed the caulk.
I have had tanks 20 plus years never needed resealing. it really depends on the condition of the seal, how the tank was maintained. quality of the tank to begin with. if was left dry and possibly out side for any length of time.
for the most part i would say no, resealing every 10 years should not be needed.
I would not use GE silicone to construct an aquarium. Its just not strong enough. Most people use it to add an extra layer of protection from potential minor leakages. It just makes sense for GE, to state this warning, to protect itself from liability. Not so much because it may be toxic to aquarium inhabitants.
