I'm currently growing out 2 green terrors, 1 Jack Dempsey, 1 Texas cichlid, and 1 Mayan cichlid, which I am about to separate into individual tanks. But I was wondering if it was possible to keep them all for life in a tank with dimensions of 96"x 36"x 30", with lots of drift wood and rock inside. And would it be possible to keep something large like a clown knife with them?

Hello; I just wish to follow this thread to learn. I have not tried what you suggest so cannot say from experience.

I suggest not adding a Clown Knife the Cichlid's need the space.

Always hit and miss with cichlids, what works in one tank the exact same stock might not work in someone else's tank. With a tank that size you have a good chance of getting a community to work but will still probably have to add/remove till a workable stock is reached, my advice would be make sure you have a spare tank.

I also live in South texas, corpus Christi. And just bought a house with a 500 gallon pond in the back yard. Any chance any if these fish besides the Texas cichlid could live in it all year?

The Mayan could.

Not sure about the clown knife, but the cichlids should be ok in the tank. It’s big enough.

I'm just trying to figure out every option possible. If I could have 10 different tanks, I would be happy. But my wife isn't having it. And I really want a huge clown knife lol. If anybody lives in South texas and wants some green terrors, I may be looking to rehome them.

A good part of the equation is the personality of the individual cichlids.

My Oscar for example does not like other Oscar's. She has rejected five so far killing one in the process, R.I.P. Juan Carlos. But I put a GT and a RT in with her and so far she has no issues with either just a little "this is my house but you can stay bite" when first introduced.

So like other have said have dividers, spare tanks ready for if and when the chaos breaks out. Also if you can, best to make sure they are all males. I learned the hard way having a female in the mix dropping eggs every few weeks can and will add some more of that afore mentioned chaos to the tank.

Put a heated greenhouse cover over the pond in winter, then yes.
