Can small gars be kept with small arowanas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see gars get mislabeled a lot as alligator gars when they are usually other species. I know arapaima are viewed as the king of fish here but I think that's just because no one has kept a full grown alligator gar/wels catfish/a few other species.

The real problem is the destruction of their habitat but there is not much one person could do about that. One person can not hunt them though. Or you could just do catch and release fishing if you really want to.

I have no problem with fishing, I fish all the time. Actually went 4 or 5 trips catfishing this weekend. What I have a problem with is killing a fish of that size and age, when there aren't that many around. Habitat loss is definitely a factor, but what I think is causing them the most problems is past killings. This fish inspired fear across the south, causing mass numbers to be killed off either through electric boats, fishing and shooting them, or just shooting them out of the water. You can find this on a google search. If you can, check out the river monsters on alligator gar. It really gives perspective on why the fish is threatened, and the fear it instilled in so many people. This fear wad, of course, unfounded.

So when the neighborhood children drive you nuts you can threaten to feed them to your fish.
Eh, just get an alligator pit for that. You would chuck all those annoying feral cats that keep spraying your bushes in there, maybe chuck a raccoon or two in there when you have guests over...

You wanna have gators in a pit? Knock yourself out lmao. Large carnivorous fish are much cooler. Plus when kids vanish, no one is gonna question the guy with large fish. They will question the guy with gators.
