We are going to go out of town for 2 weeks. We love our 55 gallon tank...2 rainbowfish (Madagascar and lake kutubu), a three spotted gourami, senegal bichir, and peacock eel.

In the past, we used automatic feeders (We've only had the bichir and eel for about 6 months and haven't left them yet). What do you do when you go out of town? Do we need to find a pet sitter? How do you find a good one?

Thank you for any help!!

Turn off the lights. I usually power feed 2-3 days ahead then make sure the tank are fully secure from fish jumping out. Sometimes I even cover the tank with a towel so fish can rest longer. 3-4 days no eating is not a problem at all.

Left some of my fish for 15 days once, were fine, I always do a water change before I leave, sometimes I use a fish dispenser

I just do a wc before I leave and let them fast for the time I'm away.

Last year, however, I did played it safe, and made a special arrangement for my 20" giant gourami. Fearing he could get Ill tempered from hunger and cause damage, I built him a pen and placed him in the small pond on my property. I had a friend come over a few times and throw in some heads of romaine lettuce. All the other fish in the house just fasted.20170819_185113.jpg 20170906_202317.jpg

Welcome aboard:)
Great advice from everyone.

We don't have anyone we trust as much as ourselves! We really love all our fish.

I just want to make sure I have this right... Does power feeding mean feeding extra a couple days before? I planned on the water change the night before we left. I'll probably leave an automatic feeder for the benefit of the rainbow fish and gourami.

My main concern is the bichir getting hungry and attempting to go after his tank mates. The peacock eel is pretty peaceful.

Will the bichir be alright without his usual blood worms/ tilapia, etc? He definitely doesn't eat flakes! We're going to be gone for 15 days.

I've left my polys for 3 weeks without issue. I usually prepack food for every few days, then whoever is looking after the house can't overfeed :)

In a pond? Whoah haha. Everything went okay in there?

Wouldn’t worry about power feeding. Would separate the peacock eel. That can easily be a victim of hunger due to its slim and elongated body. Unless it too big to be eaten.
