I have an extra 40g tank and was thinking of setting it up as a low maintenance tank. Would love to do a cold water fish so I don’t have to worry about a heater.

Are there goldfish that fit into a 40g for life? Well aware of the large tank need for common/comet gold fish. I really don’t like that fat/big cheek/bubble fish gold fish though.

If the answer is no, are there other cool cold water fish that would fit in the tank?

Thanks!!

I keep 8 fancy goldfish in a 150g. they are poop machines. I don't run heater in there tank and they are doing great but it's far from being low maintenance because of all the poopy. I have to clean out the fx4 every 2-3 weeks because it clogs.

I was planning on starting a low maintenance tank like you but with an empty 75g I have . gonna fill it up with about 40 green barbs and white minnows and a canister filter and see how that goes, throw in a bunch of plants to help keep nitrates down and hopefully get water changes down to once every 2 weeks or just small water changes every week.
I rarely do water changes in my 40g planted tank , just too off each week, that's what I'm aiming for.

Well planted Community with:longfin white cloud minnows, albino cherry barbs and a bullfrog tadpole with some pond snails.
