At this size I think it might be hard for him to break his back, he was in the tank when you found him correct? what are your water test readings? any tankmates that might have beaten him up?

May have just knocked himself silly. May be a more serious injury. But If he doesnt recover in a day or two he probably wont at all.

What size tank? Probably not the best idea to give feeders to arowanas unless the tank is quite large. They are fast and powerful but dont change directions very quickly and are well known to smash into walls hard when they get spooked or give chase.

That being said, make sure its not a water quality issue. Could be a contaminant or sometimes lethargic behavior indicates low oxygen levels.

Looks like his slime coat is damaged on top and has some sand stuck to him, which would lead me to believe he might be injured. Do you test your water? Any ammonia, nitrite, etc? How long has tank been established?

He keeps trying to swim then sinks back down but he is staying up and not on his side or showing any signs of swim bladder issue

I would test water parameters to rule that out. Likely not the issue, but better to not guess.
