Stingray & Ammonia Troubles

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've pictured my sump and the entire undercarriage. I did not install any of the plumbing, at most Ive had to replace the tubing due to leaking. The pump is very old. Its going to need to be replaced soon. View attachment 1321459 View attachment 1321460 View attachment 1321461 View attachment 1321463 View attachment 1321462

Thank you. The plumbing doesn’t look terribly restricted. I misspoke, you for sure need more bio media. Try to fill the compartment the best you can. If there is an gardening place nearby they may sell the 50 lb bags of ceramic grow media for $24. Really any media you can get your hands on to fill it will help a lot. You may consider swapping the pump in the near future too.

I found a good external pump that has a flow rat of 2500 at four foot head height, would this be more adequate?
With the media, should I build it upward a big for aerobic bacteria growth as well or keep it completely submerged?

Since you already have submerged and need to be quick about it you should stick with submerged media.

2500 GPH is a great follow rate for that tank. Will you overflows handle that rate? If not, try the more media route first. May get lucky with just that. Either way you’ll need the additional media so it’s an easy first step.

This is a good point, I don't want to do too much at one time. I'm always adjusting the overflows so I'm sure it won't become an issue, hopefully. Should I replace the pot scrubbies or keep them with the added media? They haven't been in there for very long. Maybe about two weeks.

Personally I would keep the pot scrubbers in.

More media, more flow and less water changes of 20% max.
Your filter is constantly in a mini cycle and can't handle the bio load.(compounded by big water changes)
You should be getting Nitrate readings and if not then the filter is not working efficiently yet.

if the pot scrubbers were placed 2 weeks ago, means before that there is almost no media?

This is true. Before the scrubbers there was just the small bag of lava rock. I couldn't figure out for the life of me how much biological media this tank would need, and now I know.

I can see this being an issue. I messed with the filtration all night amd brought the flow rate up dramatically. Pipes are clean and there, nothing lodged everywhere so hopefully this will help. How often should 20% water changes be done twitch a Sting ray?
