Lucky we have American Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As long as you dont slowly breed weak bloodlines due to easy living environments. Most humans have unfortunatley walked this road and would perish if put under any severe longterm environmental stresses. To put it simply there really arent any benefits in life of being a piss weak human or animal

.

eh?
For all the self-righteous ppl.. why stop at 250g, 500g, 1000g? have you asked your fish whats good for them? Taking your ungrounded theory to the extreme - you should all take your fish back to the rivers - thats the only true as to where and how fish should live.
Not that old chestnut again.

I almost don’t understand where all these comments are coming from. OP has a system that works out for him who gives a horse last crap about it being too small or overstocked blazay blah. The fishes are obviously healthy and in good condition, and that’s really all that matters. You people are too sensitive about things that aren’t yours. This is why half the real MFKers don’t post crap because of negativity like this from people with internet knowledge. I’ve purposely kept fish that people say “oh it’s not gonna work from what I’ve read” man eff what you read this is real experience and OP you are doing a freakin AMAZING JOB. You need no explanation to people. I salute you

I agree. Every video I've seen from him showcase gorgeous fish, who knows what happens to the stock in the meantime? I think it's wrong to assume the worst. Maybe he had a power outage, or made a mistake (God forbid), or as he already stated moved fish that formed pairs on to other tanks.

His original intention for this thread was to show his gratitude for being able to keep fish he admires. It's not like he asked if he was overstocked or for advice, I understand this is a forum but.

Not somthing I would set up but am happy you posted it for us to take look at.
Can't deny the fish look great, my preference would be to just have a couple in a more scaped natural looking tank, is this something you would consider doing or do you like the overstocked style?

It's no different than what people are told to do in a African tank. Just because the fish are from a different part of the world, doesn't mean a pecking order isn't achieved.

Am I the only one who see's that in these overstocked tanks the fish are actually swimming in open water from top to bottom of fish tank in what seems to be near zero stress. Where as nearly every time I have even seen or kept cichlids in a "natural environment" they are generally more flighty, and less likely to swim in open water and sometimes people even recommend dither fish to make them feel more comfortable when in reality a community of American cichlids has proven more successful than not. You all just seem to keep viewing this with your cups half empty forgetting that even though overstocked tanks don't work all the time you fail to realize they work most of the time with a little adjustment and precaution with a long term outlook having no more issues than any other setup overstocked or not.

Young Central American cichlids can be skittish but generally mature adults like the op's aren't, in fact you would normally expect them to be flairing up and glass banging at that size but that won't happen in a overstocked tank as the fish have no territory to defend.
There are a few keepers on this site who have fantastic ca communitys, ragin cajin, sbgbuddy for example I am highly jealous of both there tanks, both of them will tell you they have to change round stock occasionally due to various reasons and the tanks can be ever evolving. If you look at the op's youtube page his stock changes all the time, there's not anything necessarily wrong with that if he has other tanks and rotates his stock about. To me he came across as basically saying you can have any random collection of cichlids and make it work if you have experience, which is miss leading to new keepers who might read this post.

Not my findings but whatever.

Totally agree.

I think people are taking some of the posts in this thread too personally.
It was not my specific intention to flame the ops tank but to allaborate on the first few posts after the ops. Tank size and stocking was brought up, I believe the resulting replies are all very true. If the op wants a highly stocked tank full of aggressive cichlids that's cool but let's not pretend they are problem free and the fish are living the dream.
