How does one manage to handle mold and humidity when making a huge pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You're 14 planning for the future with a 3,000 gallon pond and you're not sure that you'd be able to afford a 1k dehumidifier? No. I'm not discouraging you from planning, hell, I'm doing that now, what I'm trying to say is that if you're actually able to get a 3,000 gallon pond then a 1k dehumidifier should be no problem.
It’s not the dehumidifier, it’s the cost of running it and stuff

Dehumidier worked best for me when I had a basement pond

Mine plugged in. You hooked up some fittings and it was done.

You posted this in two locations. I responded to the other thread im not repeating it here too. Bout the same thing as everyone else says though. Except I addressed heating.

Listen man, I'll tell you what has been told multiple times on this site when people asked about the running costs of a large tank.
The upfront costs will be high but after getting it running the costs will be much less.
If you do your research on energy usage and shop around then you'll be able to get a lower energy cost then what you would have had if you just got whatever you had gotten just by looking at the size of the filter etc...

Also not many people will ever think of this but have you considered solar panels? They can either off set the costs directly by being bought by the electric company if they will or they can lower your energy costs by giving you free energy to use.
Yes they are expensive in the beginning and will take about a decade to pay themselves off but they will still help you out.

If you're as serious about fish as I am then you'll come up with some of the most creative solutions hehe.

Ok thanks

Ok but how much did it cost to RUN it, $1,000 is nothing, it’s the cost that I’m worried about
If you're worried about the running cost of the dehumidifier I think you probably can't afford a pond. :)

But for a good quality residential dehumidifer, here they're about $1000, run 200-300 watts and are rated to remove about 30 liters from the air per day.

It will be running full out in your situation, so that works out to about 220 kwh/month. I don't know your electricity rates, here that would be $55/month. You'd probably need several of them to keep the humidity down with the huge surface area of a pond. So maybe $150/month. One advantage is they do heat the air a bit, so it will drop your heating bill some.

A commercial unit will cost a lot more to buy, probably similar efficiency and running cost relative to water removal, maybe a bit better..
