Oscar tank size...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Go buy the largest tank that you can afford, then come back & ask what you can keep in it.

I have helped move Asian aros over 30" (with a tape measure on it) so obviously the bigger the better. That, and an aro may or may not accept an O for a tank mate. So even in a 300+ gallon tank, that combo may or may not work.

If you are dead set on keeping an Oscar in a 50g tank, I’d suggest you see if you can find and rescue one that is already old and stunted from being kept in a too small of a tank.

Maybe like a 3 year old Oscar who is only 7-8 inches from being kept in a 30-40g tank...maybe?

I’m not sure if fish resume growing if given the optimal environment or not? Maybe it would be just as cruel to keep him in your 50g, maybe a more experienced person can comment on if my idea is worth looking into?

I am going to upgrade my tank... To about 180 gall

FWIW......My oscar is 12+, and he is definitely cramped in a 75. I would suggest either a 120 or a 125 gallon depending on if you like a longer tank or a taller tank. Either one I think would be fine for a pair of O's, but not much else.

No experience with Arowanas, would suggest raising an oscar for awhile first before bustin out the cash for one though.
