so I have a 300 gallon tank 28 by 30 by 84, I and getting 5, 3” rio mag umbee’s my plan is to grow them out and only keep one or two. I have 2 questions could I keep more than one male umbee in a tank without any females and is there any tank mates that I raise with the umbees that wouldn’t be a threat to them but could still survive, with lots of small holes in rock and driftwood, thanks

Male umbriferum require ALOT of space on their own. A 300 gallon will not be enough space for two males. Once paired up it is likely you would be able to do a pair in that size aquarium.

Typically with large CA/SA cichlids smaller fish not seen as a threat are left alone. Unfortunately umbriferum in my experience are piscivorous and won't pass up an opportunity to eat smaller fish.

While hands down my favorite cichlid cohabitating is difficult as they are extremely aggressive and predatory in nature. Best kept alone.

Ok, my original plan was to get 5 umbees and keep the nicest male, so even just for when they are growing out as they are small I couldn’t put anything else in there? Maybe plecos and some other type of ca cichlid. Because 300 gallons is a lot of room for a couple of 3” fish

I thought we were talking long term. Certainly as you rowing out you will be able to keep others with them.

When growing out, very likely you are going to be able to cohabit with others. In my experience as they grow their territory demands grow and they begin dispatching tankmates. Maybe you will get lucky, every fish is different

Once they reach 5 inches, all bets are off.
It's better to just get a group and let them sort it out.

Trust me, if well cared for, you will have a 12 inch fish in a matter of a year.
