Can't identify issue with aligator gar

Well sadly he didn't make it idk what happened he came back and looked really good up until today. Turned all pale again and had red blotches on his head and dorsal fin. started churning and layed upside down. I quickly set up a salt dip and put him in a smaller tank and he held on for a few hours and just took a few big gulps and rolled. Put him under the air bubbles for a bit came back and rolled again. Idk what could have caused it in a 24 hour time frame. He went from healthy looking again to dead so quick. The other fish is perfectly fine no issues at all through out this whole ordeal. Any idea what might have happened? Sucks so much

sad that I didn't see this sooner.
First of all, the pleco might have killed him by sucking slime coat at night lead to skin infection.
Secondly, when the first sign showed, all you needed to do was large water change, throw the pleco out and at salt(aquarium salt or raw sea salt, not epsome salt). all gar don't do well with modern medication so adding medication will only stress it out even more.

Sucks where I'm located has petco and that's it. I tried my best to figure out what to do. This was my first fish and it was good for a year. Had such a cool personality we spent so much time training and socializing. I'm definitely going to miss him but now I'm going to learn as much as possible before I get any more fish.
