So, I have a 23 gallon tank that has had an algae problem and it was pretty ugly and boring, I was kind of dissapointed in it. So, one day I decided I get rid of both problems at once and completely re-scape the tank. So, yes, this is an old tank but I changed so much you could technically call it new. Before the re-scape, I had this stock:
1 angelfish, 3 giant danios, 1 cory catfish.
after the re-scape I added 4 tiny Otocinclus catfish and a whole lot of plants. My first (kind of successful) aquascape!

How'd you remove the algae? Currently have a bit myself..
Well, in this case, I completely restared and drained all the water, put the fish in a 10 gallon quarantine and changed the gravel and everything (this algae was actually pretty horrible), but you could do a blackout and only turn the lights on when your feeding them
