Yes good for cycling. Use both sponge and ceramic rings.

The sponges will serve 2 purposes surface for beneficial bacteria and mechanical filtration. The ceramic will be a surface for beneficial bacteria only.

think of it this way, the sponge will keep the ceramic cleaner for longer. and filter the water a bit. win win.
