180 gallon filtration with overflows

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A sump is cheaper and better than two fx6s, If you could make it I would highly recommend it as they are the best filtration method imo. You could also buy a 2nd hand fx6s but that can be a risk
I kind of like the AquaTop FZ13 filters, I think two of them would be powerful enough. I just think that building a sump would be a lot of work and that it would probably take several revisions to get it working at optimal efficiency. I have also been pretty busy with school recently, and I'm not sure if I have time to build a sump because I want to get the tank set up soon, it is currently just sitting outside, and I do not want water freezing in the tank while it's outside.

Here are pictures of the overflow boxes:

I removed one of the bulkhead fittings, I'm going to have to replace all of them anyway, but I'm thinking of leaving the return pipes but replacing the overflow pipes with just strainers and using those as the intake for the canister filter.

Yeah I think with the overflow you should go with a sump, you could use 30 gallon totes you get from walmart for a hell of a lot cheaper than a 55 gallon tank, I am a firm believer in sponge filters and believe every tank should have one so I think it would be beneficial for you to add one into your tank too to supplement your other filtration. I think the idea of having the overflow pipes lead to a canister filter, some good brands are Fluval, Eheim, Polar Aurora, or you can make your own

Yeah, but if I build a sump I want to do it right and not have it fall apart after a year or two. Not a big fan of that joey filter.
Ok, if you want to (and I can understand why) get a 40-55 gallon tank for a sump and spend an extra few hundred dollars for a real canister filter then go for it, I don't blame you and honestly would buy some fluval fx6s if I was in your position

Those "filters" are garbage. They do not work and when they fail you will flood.

Run a sump. Like stated you can get a tote from hd or lowes up to a 55g like the one I'm using and one of those stacking drawer things and make a super easy wet dry. The emperor of the universe or whatever he is calling himself nowadays made this too. While a lot of his stuff is basically garbage waiting to fail some stuff you just cant screw up. This sump cost me about $60 and an hours worth of labor.
Tote $20
3 drawer chest $20
20lbs of lava rock $10.
1 roll of cotton batting for mech filtration $10.
Now a return pump can cost you some money but if your sump is in your stand will be cheaper, mines in the basement.
Way more efficient, way better filtration, much easier to clean. Pump heater and filtration all in one spot.
Looks like crap works like a dream.

This filters a 180 like yours, a 40b and a 29g.

I've built filters before, if I went with a sump, I'd want to go with a moving bed, but like I mentioned earlier, I feel like if I built a filter, I would likely have to make revisions to get it working efficiently, and I don't want to do that. I want to go with canisters. Would two of those AquaTop ones work? Are there any Eheim canisters that are cheaper than the FX6 that would work?

You could go for sun sun canister filters if your on a budget, they’re cheap but pretty good. I would do one sun sun filter and two of the larger eheim filters as they are really customiseable.

there are, but I think the fluval would work better as far as price goes, I found some for a 160 gallon tank by eheim, but they cost 200 dollars, you would need to get 2 of them for 320 gallons, meanwhile a fluval fx6 is 350 dollars (roughly) and gets you 400 gallons

Yeah but I have two overflows so I need two canisters.
