Reptile Keepers Have It Made

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Everything can be expensive when you want to go big, yeah you can create a huge vivarium or tank for a reticulated python or something along those lines, but decorating, heating, bulbs etc can be very expensive, unless you have a plain enclosure.

I keep both reptiles and fish, fish are by far more high maintanence though

I dont know. Again I think it depends on stock. I do a weekly wc/glass clean feed everyother day pretty easy on my tanks. Depending on the reptile ive had weekly to daily interaction time feeding varies from every 3 weeks with my cornsnake to everyother day with my tortoise to daily feedings on some of the monitors ive had, and daily fresh water changes on all for drinking except the tortoise of coarse. I think all and all it varies greatly with reptile type and its more then just a simple blanket statement of x is easier then y.

Man you go away for a few days and miss a good discussion.
I gotta say, I have a 55 gallon I’m planning for some fire skinks and the entire set up with lizards will cost less than how much I spent on my filters for my 55 gallon alone. It will cost less than what I spent on my 29 gallon.
The only thing that can get the price to come close and in time overcome it is the crickets that I’ll have to get to feed him.

Breed crickets to save money!
Also congrats! Fire skinks are cool lizards

Once I get on a larger scale (which I will eventually) breeding crickets will be inevitable as will other various insects and such.

Seems to me there isna reptile show here in January and they usually have baby tegus. So my guess is its breeding season now. I had a black and white when I was young. Super chill lizard. Big though, mine was about 3.5' total pretty hefty too.

Haha, think you just missed it!

Your right, well by a couple months. Been talking with the guys at Underground. Their Tegu's are brumating atm, will breed in the spring, then another 65 to 70 days for the eggs to hatch so a ways out yet.

In the mean time I will build it's house.
Plans are for a 4x4x8 plywood enclosure. Gonna have 2 windows on the front for ease of access. Twelve inches of bedding depth so when he is a four foot long monster can still be able to burrow down( not when he's small only like four inches or so and increase depth as he ages). Will have two 3ft long UVB lights, a spot heat lamp for basking and a heat radiator to keep the temps at 85deg. Stays pretty humid here in the North West but will use a spray bottle to maintain the 85% humidity they need.
Since I am disabled and can't work I am home all day long so will have a crap ton of time to spend with my Tegu and work on taming. Since starting with a brand new hatchling will help as well.
