Is there anyway I can keep it cool if it does get too warm? I am going to do a pond like the one pictured above

Youd have to keep it shaded. No more than 4-5 hrs of direct sun light a day. You'd also want to maintain good areation and circulation.

The deeper your pond the more stable and easy it is to maintain temps

Hello from a fellow Arizonan!

Here are tips to keeping ponds cooler in summer:
Dig pond deep, allowing for a cooler zone for fish to enjoy.

Add some shade to protect fish from heat.

Place pond in a cooler area of the yard

Add a chiller (optional)

With that being said , do you plan to keep tropical or temperate fish?

I plan to keep bluegill bass and baby flathead catfish, but I’m only keeping the catfish till he’s too big to be in my pond

Also, how deep do you recommend it be?

Like other have said, dig it deep and keep it shaded. I’d say completely shaded from direct sunlight.

I’m a northerner with a 4 1/2ft pond in direct sunlight. I do extra water changes in the summer to combat rising water temps. Next year I’ll be adding shade to the pond to help.

If I were you I’d be looking at 5-6ft deep if you can swing it.
Ponds are great and it’s true what they say; You’ll never regret going bigger, but you’ll always regret starting small. Haha

Fellow AZ dude here, just keep your pond topped off and make sure you have as much surface agitation and shade as possible
