Hi,

I am planning to buy some dovii fries that are about 1.5-1.75 inches at the moment. I plan to grow them out in a 75g tank that is currently unoccupied. I will gradually thin them out and just keep a male or a pair (if it does form) in a 180g.

What I wanted to know was how long do I have? A year to 15 months?

Can someone advise.

Thanks!

Dovii grow quite fast, in my experience my trio grew from 1.25 inches to 6-8 inches in well under a year in a 60 gallon tall. 50-80ish% water changes every 5 days. My favorite of the bunch was my largest female(My profile pic). A 180 is a little small for an adult male or especially a pair in my honest opinion. It would last for a while though.

One of many threads on dovii tank size on MFK. Maybe you could go with one of the smaller parachromis or amph species that would better fit your fish for life.

If you haven't yet check out Andy woods on YouTube beautiful dovii umbees and other big cichlids very knowledgeable filled with great info

They're in the Oscar and jag realm of growth rate. They'll usually reach around 7-10in a year then growth really slows.

Male vs female, water quality, how they eat, how young you breed then at all play roles.

Agreed, when ever my females would lay eggs they would really reduce how much they ate and grew until either the eggs or fry were gone.
I fed mine frozen bloodworms, small cut tilapia, market shrimp, krill, NLS cichlid pellets, NLS AlgaeMax, massivore pellets, omega one pellets, fluval bug bites, Hikari cichlid gold and mine would take peas and other veggies on occasion idk if other people had the same results with veggies but mine appreciated it.

That's one heck of a list. I just feed omega or nls. Then treat with insects on occassion.

Ime I think people should wait 2yrs before breeding.

Thanks, I got alot of food and supplies from my grandparents getting out of the hobby a few years back. The list is much shorter now for my fish but that is what i raised my dovii on at the time.
