Ospreys...Of course

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You may have seen my other thread with the clarias batrachus I caught. I put him in a large tub for quarantine and since he lived out here in the hot miami water I put him out in the hot miami air. He was doing fine and I was going to go medicate him when I saw an osprey fly over and take him :(. I want to set up a pond for walking catfish and bowfin and such, but how do I protect em?

Run fishing line or get a net.

Pond nets are used for koi I’m sure they would work. I know some just run lines across the ponds to deter birds from doing fly by’s .

Ospreys are a bird of prey. So I’m sure they are afforded some protection. I don’t know the specifics but you may want to do some research or at least don’t tell anyone if anything bad was to happen to the bird. Like getting caught in a net or something.

I may be totally wrong about that. I’m just trying to cover all the angles! Lol

You can use koi nets but also use a predator decoy. Alligator float would be a good choice since an osprey in FL is going to see that as something to avoid. Net is a last line of defense. Decoy will deter the birds from crashing it and becoming injured.

Please try to avoid harming you local wildlife where you can. Its their home too.

*Sorry you lost your fish*

Good idea about using the alligator decoy, I never would have thought of that myself and I don’t think many others would have either.

I assume you just aren't aware but what you did was illegal and punishable by law.

MFK has zero tolerance on discussion of anything illegal on its forums but you are new and young and at the mercy of the MFK staff right now.

I didn't see your other thread but now you have two threads discussing an illegal activity.

Walking catfish in Florida is a kill-on-landing fish. Cannot let it go, cannot keep it alive, cannot transport it alive. Same with snakehead. It pays to visit FWC website and learn about the restricted and prohibited fish and the invasives and how to handle them if caught.
