If actual evidence of past alien life was found, it would essentially doom us as a species by proving that the great filter exists, and that it is ahead of us.

Thats definitely possible.

But theres also theories that the alien life may not be "past" but "present"
Also doesnt necessarily have to be alien

Most likely just something that looks similar. Humans have a tendency to see patterns in things when there really are none, it's called pareidolia.
