Too make matters worse look into bocourti.

I think the syns and bifa are better looking than pearsei ive never had those two specific fish but have had other vieja. Personality wise they dont compare to the pearsei. To be fair ive only kept zonatus, heterospilus, and argentea.

The pearsei and het are probably the last cichlids i'll own.

Bocourti look good but to me are like owning a festae personality wise.

I really like argentea but they're really aggressive for what I want to do in the space I have available. I was originally going to do a pair of trimac, but wanted to keep it a somewhat peaceful community so the fam can enjoy.

I was mainly checking to see if the syn/ bifa are as personable as the pearsei.

Oh i get it i just wanted to say ive only kept those vieja and not insinuate that bifa and syns arent social from 1st hand experience.

For me with the exception of heterospilus viejas were some of the most aggressive fish ive kept

duanes duanes

The few I've had weren't too bad except the argentea and zon. I'm about sold on pearsei everyone that has one has such great things to say. I do like the coloration on the syns and especially the bifa.

Syns look amazing no doubt.

My family loves the damn pearsei. I dont know if its a true measure of intelligence or maybe unforeseen factors but the fish seems to be able to tell us apart. I have vids of his reaction towards my wife vs the rest of us. Pretty cool. He'll hand feed from my wife, getting close to doing it with my daughter but refuses to accept food from me.

Ive given up on cichlid comms... just ro much damn work. Or either i suck at it lol

While I really like all the "vieja" types, none of the species I have kept have been as outgoing and/or personable as my ~7 year old pair of pearsei. I've had these two since they were only a few inches. They are not skittish at all and readily feed from my hand. They are also very curious and are always watching what I am doing, even from a different room. I can't reccomend them enough.

Another thing to keep in mind is how many vieja species can be extremely hard on their mate, often times with the male killing the female. This will be even more of a problem if they are in a tank alone as there will be no other fish to diffuse aggression. With pearsei, I doubt you would have such a problem.

Do you have any full shots of the community? I really like that black belt coloration
I'll take one and post when I get home from work. It's just the three vieja in there with 5 Balas and a Pictus cat. They've been together for about 4 or 5 years now and get along ok.
