Fish Who Don't Fit the Mold

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Both of my bgk's ate whatever I put in their tanks. Mainly hikari pellets but the odd frozen treat here and there too.

Do they not usually eat pellets and stuff?

Supposedly they are stubborn live feeders. I guess ours didn't get the memo.

Mine definitely didn't get the memo lol. My last one wouldn't touch live fish, I had some black widow tetras in with her temporarily that she could have eaten if she'd wanted but never even looked twice at. She was about 12" at the time and they were young fish at barely 1".

Post script: I don't know if she was actually female or not, but her name was Gwen... :D

I've got two peacock bass (kelberi) that will only eat pellets (and occasionally live guppies). I am trying to let them eat smelt/silversides but they keep refusing it. Another strange thing is that they prefer the green hikari pellets, not the red ones for carnivores. The Uaru's and Hoplarchus in the tank do really like the silversides.... Reversed world in that tank.

The crenicichla Atabapo in the same tank is a pussy! He is afraid of the Uaru's en they determine how close he is allowed to approach them.

You mean he acts like a penis? Coz I own a pussy and it can take a beating and still function as intended. A penis on the other hand will dissapear at the slightest inconvience. Sit on that thing the wrong way and yall call time out. Lolz

We have some strange friendships! The Texas / Midas with the goldfish has to take the cake. That needs photos!

I have pictures of all of the odd couples, I think. I know there are some of the female pearl gourami and the male angelfish guarding his eggs together and her chasing off the female angelfish. Just have to find and upload them.

It should be easy to get some of the red tail shark (definitely a shark) with her clown loach buddies the next time I see them together, which happens quite often. I saw them grazing together for biofilm on a rock earlier today. The shark is just one of the school as far as the clowns are concerned.

Our black ghost knives eat anything offered to them. The seller thought that they would only ever eat live food but they snarf anything from flakes, sticks and pellets to pleco wafers, freeze-dried or frozen bloodworms and krill... and of course live too. They also get along. I got them when they were tiny and introduced them at the same time. Each has staked its own territory but at night they dance together in circles in the common areas, partying it up while everyone else sleeps.

"I"n the wild, mouthbrooding females will release their fry at reefs where maternal Lepidiolamprologus profundicola are busy guarding their young from predators. The young C. leptosoma rely on the presence of this surrogate mother. Even though she does not actively protect them, her presence is sufficient to prevent appreciable losses. For instance, it has been documented that when a maternal L. profundicola is present, fry of C. leptosoma are attacked by predators at a rate of two per hour. When she leaves, this figure jumps to about ten per hour. And those without a baby sitter are attacked about twenty times per hour! (Watanabe 2000)."
From here:

You can see it is normal for cichlids to protect fry that are not their own.

This is 125gs. There are 3 common GF about 4 inches long. A dozen tiger barbs, 10 neon rosey barbs, 6+ baby super red BNs and that monster in the back there doesn't mess with any of them. Put her in with anything her size and she is tearing it apart.
That's a beauty of a hybrid! I dont find it so odd tho... I have the same with my female jack... she wont leave any fish her size alone but small young cichlids she doesnt bother with... have her and her mate in a 110 and put a red texas/flowerhorn juvie in there to grow out... they eat together.. share the cave together.. lol fish

I have some pics of the angelfish / pearl gourami pair and a really crappy pic of some clown loaches with their red tail shark friend (need to scrape algae). I found it hard to get a shot of them in a pile because I jacked up the tank temperature to get rid of ich on a few fish. It has changed their behavior... the loaches are much flightier.

At first Proton the male angelfish was very reluctant to accept June the pearl gourami's advances. He was happily paired with Neutron and expecting their first fry. She pursued him. Literally.

Eventually he caved and June drove little Neutron away. She helped Proton guard the eggs. There were only a few because Neutron was still so little.

They presented a united front.

Neutron tried her best to share custody of her eggs.

Alas, she was sent to jail inside a tank ornament. :(

Here's the bad shot of some clown loaches and the red tail shark. They are nibbling biofilm off the rock. I will try to get a better picture.
