Why not just explain how to care for the fish properly. Couldnt it be that he wasnt aware ? Maybe offer to buy the fish from him ?

It's a good point. However, from a different perspective I suppose we should also explain to child abusers how to care for the child properly after the fact? Why should one give the better rights to the abuser? Why award ignorance and ignore the rights of the victim? And I know it is just a fish but there has been times in history when that "pet" was a human being.....

Wait are you saying a child and fish or any animal are on equal ground ? An abused child isnt stolen from the parents btw.

So its acceptable to steal something rather than having a conversation with this person ? If op lost her job because of this would the employer be at fault ?

I agree 100% This could have potentially ended in a less ignorant, more fish compassionate co-worker. Lots of dumb asses in the world, that doesn't mean that we should take their sheet and run. If it did, I'd have a pretty spectacular collection of cars in my yard.
