HOB Filters vs Sponge Filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sponge filters are great. The only drawback is the room the big sponges take up inside the tank.
The AC 110, HOB is more or less a hyper-drive sponge filter.
The included foam sponge fills up half the media box.
I used sponges in my old Discus setup and they did a great job. I use the AC 110's now.

I only have sponges in my h.o.b with pothos growing out of them. I have 5 or 6 AC110s but I got a tidal 75 and I really like it. it has a skimming feature and adjustable flow. theres still a sponge filter in all my tanks too.

I think it would depend on the foam used in the hob denser foam would provide more surface area for bb to grow on. Im not a huge fan of bio wheels.

I swapped out all the foam in my ac's for 30ppi poret foam. Its really close to the same consistency of a sponge. They even have 45ppi but it clogs to fast.

The rate at which it moves water (contact time to convert ammonia) has to be the major factor. I think sponges have their place but i prefer hob's

I dont know. Swisstropicals sells the poret foam, they probably have decent pics on the site. Ive used 20ppi in my old cans to pick up large debris. If i had to guess it would probably be close to that. It comes in sheets all you do is cut to fit. Ive been using the same foam for a few yrs now. Maybe over 4 or 5 yrs tbh. Good quality

Next Cleveland Cichlid Association Extravaganza I will buy a sheet of Poret Foam. Swisstropical has been to the last 3 convention's.
