New Ray Tank Build - General Information Appreciated

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I also like the idea of having 2 tanks connected to the same sump/filter setup to increase the overall system water volume. This would greatly reduce the fluctuation in water parameters. I see the new inkbed temperature probe system has the ability to put a probe in 2 locations so I could monitor each tank individually as well with the same equipment.

Thanks for the response, you guys are starting to talk me into getting a larger tank as well. I like the idea of having the 2 side-by-side. one for pups and another for adults. My basement is unfinished so I have lots of room to work with and change the setup as I move along.

Tobiassorensen Tobiassorensen what is this ibc.sipax sump you're talking about? Do you have a link to one on the internet or some pictures of it? I'd be interested in checking it out to see if that's something I'd like to also try in this setup. Right now I'm basically just planning on reusing stuff I currently have laying around and I'm open to other options.

https://goo.gl/images/D9BJx1 this is a cipax/ibc tank. They hold 1000L of water filled to the top. I fill them to about 750L. I have two of them in the old shelter im renting for my tanks that im currently using as growout and qt tanks. I have unlimited acess to these tanks via my friend im sharing the local with. So im planning on build baffles with plexipanes and build a sump out of one.

Oh yes, I've seen those bins used before for sumps in some youtube videos. I do like the fact that they have a big drain at the bottom edge and they hold a ton of water. I wouldn't find having one of those instead of the 55g drums. Not sure where I would get one though.

You may find them on your local CL under the name “IBC tote”. They come in 270 gallon and 330 gallon sizes. Peepers use them as well so search for keywords on water storage, survival etc..

It’s critical you make sure it came from a good grade use and is well cleaned. These tanks don’t corrode so are used for all kinds of hazardous chemicals.

I agree with JK47 JK47 . The ones i got is never used and are brand new so i know for sure they are safe. Make sure you get your hands on a thats been used with storing water or product for human consumption. The bottom drain is great to have. I emptying 80% of the water in those two tanks in less then 5 minutes. Since aquaponics is huge in the states maybe you should reach out to someone thats up with that and see if they got any tanks to sell you.

Yesterday I was at Sam's Club just doing my usual Saturday routine, getting free samples of food and picking up some groceries when I noticed they had a 70gallon rain barrel for sale for $100. It comes with 2 threaded holes (they look like 1/2" diameter) one near the bottom and one half way up. https://www.samsclub.com/sams/rain-wizard-69-gallon/prod21120414.ip Anybody ever use one of these?

What do you guys put in these giant 250g IBC tanks? it would take a lot of K1 media to fill that thing for strictly just a moving bed filter. Tobiassorensen Tobiassorensen , you said you were planning on dividing one of these tanks into 3 sections. Are you going to do this with egg crate or something like that where water can freely pass through or are you planning on making dividers out of acrylic or something else?

A friend of mine used to have and ibc as an moving bed for his 10000L plywoodtank. He used 600L of k1 in it. Im planning on using plexi sheets with holes drilled in it at the bottom on the first baffle and on top on the second baffle. I will as i said use 60micron filtersocks in the first compartment fludized media in second and heater returnpump and submerged media in the third.

I checked out the 210g tank over the weekend and I'm not so sure I want to go with this tank now. The overflow in the back/center of the tank is 18" wide and 16" deep (front to back) so there is only 8" of swimming space in the center of the tank to go from the left to right side of the tank. It's a bummer becuase this is a nice tank but when I saw it in person, I could tell it's built specifically for a saltwater reef. I'd rather spend the money on buying exactly what I want and not settle for something less ideal just because it was cheaper.

So now I'm back to the drawing board for picking a tank.
