Is this a red Texas Cichlid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok thanks. Yes I'm considering buying it and it's a rescue situation. The fish in the pic is about 7inches. Do you think it still has a chance to recover and grow into something beautiful?

I do, for sure. Get it home and alone, good water and good food can and will improve appearance of the fish.

Nice thanks I'll see if I can pick it up tonight
If you have the room for a big central that will be territorial do it.
Post updates in the hybrid section! Im really interested in seeing this fish improve. To have that non carpintis base color under the carpintis pearls without bleaching to orange or yellow is awesome and hard to achieve.
Just be aware it will be quite a bit meaner than your average central american cichlid.

Definitely will do. How large do they get?

It could grow to 10" or so. All those cichlid dependent things like temp, enviroment, diet will factor in haha. You also have the vigor and possible interruption of growth inhibition due to the hybridization as well. I would figure proper care + 75 gallon or larger tank expect at least a 1/2" a year for the rest of its life at this stage.

Ok that's perfect. I have a 75 with a turtle and some other fish which are temporarily homed there.

How are they with other SA cichlids?

I would keep this fish alone if at all. South Americans need soft water and Central American harder water. While that won’t matter short term your 75 gallon seems stocked at this point with the turtle and SA cichlids so it would be playing with dice to put this fish in your tank combined with it being sick and needing to heal and the likely possibility of it killing every other fish in your tank. Do have a spare temporary 40-55 gallon so you can atleast get ahold of this fish and start healing him?

Yes so all the fish in the 75 are fairly new but you're right. It needs to heal on its own. So I put it in a 40 gallon by itself for now. I can already tell this is a hyper fish!

That fish bears more than a passing resemblance to my RT. It's already pretty and will be prettier still with some TLC. I don't have enough experience to guess what it will mature to; I just think it's gorgeous.

FWIW I have found my RT Caligula to be so aggressive even at a young age that he beat several festae and jewel cichlids into submission and / or killed them. He tore apart a female carpintis and bit pictus cats in half... butt end first so he wouldn't get stung. He's in a tank by himself now on account of his tendency to murderize every living creature he comes across.
