Same here.

They can be run inline with a sump but why unless you have a way to backwash that is external to the tank. Few people can do this. There isn’t enough water volume in 99% of the sumps out there to backwash an Ultima properly.

That is so true. I have my combon on roughly 1600L of water and thats not enough to backwash my beadfilter. I need about 5000L to backwash it properly. But thats is something im going to change soon. Im in the planning of building an 13000L plywoodtank.

So how do you backwash an Ultima properly in a tank that is less than 500g/2000L? It is apparent I haven't thought this plan through yet haha. Do you have a secondary tank filled with water that T's off of the inlet side of the Ultima that you can use for strictly backwashing that wouldn't take water from your tank or something like that?

I don’t like explaining what I do. It usually confuses people and won’t work for a simple design anyway. Do lots of homework and you’ll find what’s best for you.

It’s best to just ensure you have 200 gallon access to the Ultima. If you are running it off the sump it defeats the purpose of an Ultima unless someone wants a big bio can or can properly backwash. Ultima value = backwash mechanical. Drill the tank and make it a proper closed loop. Tank holes below the 200 gallon mark and you’re done.
