Bulkhead seals.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No harm, no foul! :-) Even though you were aware of the proper location of the seal someone else wasn't and has learned how to properly install a bulkhead. Hopefully the thread has saved someone a leak! Leaky tanks suck!

When I made this mistake it was because I wanted to install a bulkhead "backwards" with the flange on the outside of the tank so the tank would not have to be as far away from the wall. Once I figured out why I had a small dripping leak I moved the seal to the flange side of the bulkhead... which was on the outside of the tank... and the leak stopped. 15+ years later that tank is still running fine, with the bulkhead flange on the outside of the tank, the seal on the outside of the tank and no leak! Sorry if I sounded rude... just trying to let others learn from my mistakes.
Wow! Wonder why the water didnt or doesnt just follow the threads? If its the "right" way the gasket prevents access to the threads. Hmmmm.....interesting.

I decided to utilize the extra space in the stand of my current build so I added an extra sump. I hooked it to my original sump with bulkheads. I glued two bulkheads together flange to flange. This required the seals on the outside of the tanks. I had a couple of schedule 40 bulkheads laying around so I mounted those higher in the tank as an emergency overflow.
You’ll notice an open hole in the back of the larger sump. That will take a 1” schedule 80 bulkhead that will be the drain line. I’ll have a stand pipe in the tank that will set the water level in the sumps. That bulkhead will also have the flange and seal on the outside of the tank. This will allow me to reach into the tank and unscrew the nut if I need to pull out the sump in the future. I spent tons of time making sure I have the ability to disassemble everything once I push this 3,000 pound monster up against the wall.
