Another tank size/stocking thread... surprise surprise.

I picked up a 14/15 inch Jag from Rapps a couple weeks ago. He's doing great in a 125 on his own. Tank is filtered with an Eheim 2262 and 2217 and my water change regiment has kept nitrates under 10ppm. I will say I am mostly content with keeping him alone.... however (of course) I would love to get some feedback on a couple ideas.

  1. A female Jag - This is my first 6 foot tank and it would be a lot of fun to see all that fascinating behavior. Jags are supposed to be easy on their females during/after breeding but I have red that you should have a 180 minimum to breed them. I would use any surviving fry as feeders, provide a few to LFS (their wouldn't be a lot of demand where I am), but they would be removed before adding to the bioload significantly.
  2. 4-5 Clown loaches - 6 inch plus - I would need to find them first. By the time they slowly got close to 10 inches I will be able to upgrade to a bigger tank.
  3. Any other suggestions? Like I said. If the answers are no to everything I'm perfectly content with things as they are.

If the jags were able to pick each other (instead of being forced on one another) then you might be okay in a 6 footer.

How much damage are you okay with on your jag from Rapps?

Wasn't expecting to hear that my big male would be the one at risk of damage. The answer is nothing that wouldn't heal and be normal with a pairing. Are the females hard on the males?

A male jag needs a 180 long term. A fish that size in a 125 is maxed out imo. Loaches that size would be really expensive id think, but would be shredded.

People say 180 for a pair but I think that's because most put them together young so they don't grow as large as quick with the constant breeding.

A 16"+ male and 12" female would be a bad idea in a 180 imo. I'm trying to find the video of a male swimming up to a guy and it's the same length as his forearm. I've had several male jags over the yrs they get big

He's pretty tame and has always been in a community before I got him. As I expected I'll keep him Solo.
