Is this a king kamfa and does it have kok potential

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
King Kamfa / 9.9 (and other fancy names) are basically marketing monikers created by the breeders -- if you go onto a Thai FB page selling Flowerhorn you'll be amazed by the creative names they're coming up with nowadays lol, e.g. 'Super Tornados' (and the equally amazing fish). But this coupled with the fact there's so much mixing nowadays it's often really hard to tell what's exactly what imo (unless perhaps you bought it directly from a breeder, but even they can be pretty secretive about what's in their Flowerhorn cocktail mixtures).

All of that said I guess it's true that esp. "King Kamfa" has through common/popular usage kind of evolved to refer to a 'higher class' of Kamfa that exceeds the usual standards. TBH I'm personally not sure if your FH meets those higher standards, but I will say he's a very lovely FH with a lot of potential if well taken care of, incl. moving to a larger tank as he grows.

In regards to his kok size, remember Kamfa heads don't get as crazy big as say ZZ Red Dragon heads, and they take longer to grow out as well. But he already has a nicely pronounced hump going on, so he should be good in that dept. too. Best of Luck growing and grooming him!

Personally I wouldn't expose him to too much "mirror grooming". Just give him room, feed him well, and clean water.

He's very nice though, will be an amazing adult.

Now I'm going to add to the perfect things already being said in this thread by every memeber that has posted so far. This male is not a KK. In fact if I had to attempt to title him, with out seeing his parents, I would title him as a King SRD created from a KK dad and SRD mom. They were very popular about ten years ago and have really come back a lot in their popularity recently. His kok should be a good size but I I'm not feeling to sure that he will have a huge water kok if that is something you are looking. Are you buying this fish online? Or at a store? If its a store, please tell me where, so I can go buy this male because I love him.....lol....... Seriously great looking Flowerhorn!!!!!!

Good call Man-made Monsters, in fact I was wondering if he might have some SRD blood too, it's seems to be getting harder and harder to find a classic Kamfa nowadays, market demand is dictating otherwise (resulting in some crazy cool but arguably even genetically weaker FH's).
