Jardini and Geophagus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was just wondering last night if the Jardini pictured above would reach its maximum size?
When I got him (roughly about 6 - 7 weeks ago I think), he had been living in the LFS in a divided 2 ft tank. A silver Aro on one side and him on the other. Not much space to move for either.
The staff member there said the Jar had been there for about 6 months, which is why he offered a great price for him to get rid of him.
Below is the video after I had just got home and put him in my 40gal holding tank. Not sure of exact size but I am guessing around 15cm? I don't think he grew much in the store either. Hope it didn't cause damage like stunting?

His diet now is a mix of three different types of Hikari pellets (Carnisticks, Sinking cichlid excel (his veggies haha), cichlid bio gold) and 3 or 4 shrimp in the morning, with another 3 or 4 in the evening (spaced out not all at once).
He also ate 20 SAEs and 3 leleupi when I put him in my 180gal lol. Over a period of two weeks. I love how the Jars take to food.

Im hoping the food will encourage proper growth.

The real problem with jars is that they are fine one day, then snap and start killing off everything the next. It usually happens when it hits maturity around the 12" mark. Mine was nice with sds and tinfoil barbs for a long time.. then around 16" he just started slaughtering everything overnight.

Thanks Reddead. I have started to see a little bit of chasing with the SDs every now and again. He just kinda snaps at them but they are so fast and always school together so he seems to loose them amoungst each other and just leaves them alone. I am really loving the Jar though.
