Looks like rolling blackouts in California this summer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ouch and I thought that one time where our power went out for 12 hours was bad.

Think they have a couple options at the very least. Solar and wind. Since they mention wind being a problem for spreading fire during the dry season I’m guessing wind is a good source of power out there.
And California is sunny right? Why not use all that to their advantage?

Even here in the north we have a lot of wind turbines and solar panels.

Hello; Interesting. I read about places in the world with regular power blackouts or intermittent power. There is a name for these countries but it does not come to mind just now.

Being without electric is bad enough, but having your house threatened by wildfire of course is another level. That got me to wondering why they haven't come out with like huge fire retardant blankets people could deploy over their houses, so I did a little checking and came across this interesting video.

That video is way back from 2010, so not sure how far the tech has progressed, but then also came across this company's site, which is used by the BLM, US Forest Service and historical preservation departments. They use some kind of aluminized-glass structure wrap but it only claims to help protect from radiant heat and burning embers, not flame/fire itself, which far exceed the 1100° Fahrenheit, 550° C it's rated for.
"Fire Shields reflect 95% of the radiant heat and protect your home from firebrands blown by the wind. They cover windows, eaves, attic vents, and your roof for maximum protection. Even if power is lost and water pressure is only a dribble your home will be protected."

Would be great to see bigger and better innovations along these lines but mother nature is crazy powerful, nothing we do here will ever be 100% protected from her occasional wraith, metaphorically speaking of course.

Two things come to mind.

1. Bloomberg engages in a lot of alarm-ism.
They are desperate to sell news. Alarm sells news.
Discount half of their garbage as unlikely or untrue.

2. I am far from the trouble-prone areas, 1/2 mile from the firehouse, and our power is underground.
It costs a lot more to bury the power lines.
But the new ones are all going underground.
