I returned home from a weekend away to find one of my African cichlids had gotten stuck in a hole in decor. I freed (her) but she has a huge chunk of her back and belly missing I assume from her attempts to free herself. I removed her from the tank so she wouldn't get chased for now. I don't have a hospital tank set up so she is in a 2 gallon glass container at the moment. She ate a few pieces of shrimp pellet. Her left side fin isn't moving as well as or as much as the right. I have done a big water change in the African cichlid tank, a 55 gallon with a dozen Lake M species. I run 2 HOB on it. Should I place her back in the tank or keep her separated? Add salt to the tank? I may be able to get a 10 gallon from a friend to create a separate recovery tank for her but it obviously won't be cycled. I posted a picture of the fish hc_1559510447400.jpg

Personally would keep seperated for awhile from main aquarium.

What kind of hobs are you using? If they have ceramic bio rings in them you can move a small portion over to the filter on the 10gal and will be ok for the one fish. Monitor closely and I would do daily water changer on it anyways to help the fish heal.

would this be a good jump-start for a new 10 gallon set up for convalescing fish? I have one HOB that has regular filter carbon slide ins/bio wheels and one that has ceramic rings in it.

Indeed it would, I did this to jump start a 5gal for a betta, moved 5 pieces into the new filter and some substrate. A QT tank I would not worry with substrate. Tho do move a some rocks what have you to give him a cave/hide.
