Nevada boy was vaping when all of a sudden his e-cigarette exploded in his face, causing extensive facial damage to the young smoker.
The seventeen year old travelled 250 miles with a bloody hole in his jaw, from a small Nevada town to a pediatric hospital in Utah where he was treated by doctors.

Wow...guess he won’t be vaping anytime soon.

I can rely on you for the strange news! Must be in the Datom Gazette.

Yeah sad that, it happens now and then (though deaths by fires caused by people falling asleep with cigarettes are still considerably more common). And a vast majority of these incidents are people using 'mechanical mods' which don't have built in protections like the more commonly used 'box mods'. Mechanical mods are for pros only, who know how to accurately build their own coils at proper resistence -- unfortunately not only pros use them though, and bad things can happen.

Here are some mechanical mods:

Here are regular box mods (with quite a few built-in protections against battery mishaps):

I'm not saying accidents can't happen with box mods, but they're much, much safer than mechanical mods and mishaps are very rare. I only use box mods. Vaping isn't perfect or health risk free, but it's way better than regular ciggies -- vaping helped me totally quite a 3-pack a day habit for over 20 years -- haven't touched a cigarette in 5 years, and feel way better for it.

Oh man:(
Hopefully this will be a lesson to other kids to steer clear of vaping. I think it’s great that smokers have something at their disposal to help get off cigarettes, but not something a person should start up on.

Yeah, seems to be a lot of them, mods to significantly increase current draw, and cheaper, lower performance batteries.

You draw more current from a lithium than it can supply, the voltage drops and it warms up.

You draw a lot more current from a lithium than it can supply, it gets really hot and then it blows up.

Fully agreed people shouldn't start either vaping or regular cigarettes, and for sure vaping is an increasing problem with kids/teens. Fact is younger generations see vaping as way cooler than cigarettes. The other problem is that vaping tastes way better than regular cigarettes; right now I'm vaping some Lemon Meringue Coconut Pie in one mod and some Frosted Sugar Cookie in another, both of which taste almost exactly like the real thing.

While I appreciate this diversity of flavors myself, I can see how easy it would be for kids to feel the same. But banning vaping won't help, kids (and adults) would eventually turn back to cigarettes, which are 10X worse. I guess better regulation, more parental/school education and harsher punishment for people/stores selling to youth is the best answer I can personally come up with.

Yeah, we all know banning things doesn’t stop the demand for it. And where there is a demand there are people/companies just waiting to make a killing(for lack of a better way to word it).

I can definitely see the appeal to kids with all the flavors you can get, but hopefully stories like this will make them think twice.

I have heard of these things exploding before, and it could also happen to a cell phone or any Li battery device, even with overload/overheat protection, if there is a dead short.

I asked the guy who runs the local smoke shop about these things. I haven't been in there much since I quit in 2008. He says the cartridges can ooze when they get too warm for too long. This can happen from overuse or storing in a hot car.

Goo gets in the thing causing resistance, people crank up the heat instead of cleaning the device. Then the battery overloads.

Burning Li batteries are hard to extinguish. A burning Prius can take 3000 gals of water to cool down from welding-range temps. (My neighbor is a fire capt. and gets to teach this stuff.)
