Bala shark hit glass and died

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I lost a couple of good size silver dollars like that. I spooked them and they'd go flying into the glass

Just an observation. It may or may not have some bearing on your balas sudden freak out moment.

I have 3 balas, they're about 9-10". Up until recently they were in a 180g and they'd often just throw a wobbler, as yours did. Since putting them in my new 360g fibreglass tank I haven't heard a whimper out of them, nor indeed my tinfoils and chalceus either, which were also very skittish at times.

I don't know whether it is the extra room that's totally chilled them out, or the fact that, unlike a glass tank, there's only one viewing panel in my new tank. Maybe they feel more secure that they can't see as many shadows passing the tank etc, which would freak them out in my all glass 180g.

Sorry for your loss by the way, it was a nice looking bala.

That sucks. I get upset with myself when accidents like this happen but sometimes there's nothing you could do. Just have to learn from it.

I mentioned that I had an old.clown Loach jump out of the tank when it got spooked during a water change about this time.last year (unbeknownst to me). Now I move clutter from the sides and try to be more careful. Also try to count the fish after the water change.

About two months ago I loss a fish, I think bc the python trashed around when I turned the water back on. I think it got hit and it was near the surface of the water after the water change and dead the next day. I learned from that and keep python secured by lid now when refilling. I got lucky in that it was a young female rainbow and not one of my more prizes fish but I was still upset.

The longer distance before hitting something is probably worth mentioning too.

That was a nice fish. Maybe instant brain hemorrage or spine break at impact? Strong fish can really hurt themselves at full speed.

Sometimes using window film on glass tops helps...either frosted or pattern.

Yep, size matters. My balas and silver dollars are very chill in the 450. I quarantined the sd's in a 90 and they were totally spastic but in the 450 the instantly mellowed
