Jewels are african. Most people try to stay same continent at least. Convicts are rough and tough. Thats really the main reason. Females are quite pretty also. As for bottom dwellers, maybe a small group of pictus or a larger syno cat.

True, what other tough fish in similar size to the Convicts would you recommend? Probably will do the Convicts for sure and maybe a few others if you could recommend any. !

It really can be a major pain to have to swap fish out for agression/health issues and crowding big CA cichlids its almost guaranteed to happen.
Also it gonna be the fish that decides its tankmates, if you get a serious jerk fish it may have to be solo

Maybe a couple heterospilus and 1 synaplium might work. Perhaps an Oscar too?
potential problem with that would be the heterospilus looking similar enough to the synspilum to piss it off. Or synspilum just wanting the tank to itself, they get huge eventually. Hard to advise on mixing vieja species in a tank this size, it's going to be luck, then trial and error, if you go that route. On the Oscar, I'd leave it out personally, and keep the tank CA fish

Yeah might leave the Oscar out. You think having 2 Heterospilus and 1 synspilum would be a bad idea? I thought since the Heterospilus are smaller and less aggressive they would out number the synspilum so there wouldn’t be too much issue .

If you go 1 vieja, 6 convicts, and a couple pictus it will have plenty going on. Convicts are pretty active. My females beg at the glass even.
