Arowana Keepers Please Help.

Well first of you will need a bigger tank then 500L an silver arowana grows to at least 100cm and are an active swimmer that never stays still. You will need at least an tank with 200x100cm footprint and that about an minimum in my eyes. Bigger is better.

But to answer your questions.

1. An arowana is quite hardy but they are looked as an expert level fish because of its size. They do get massive and will ned an huge tank with an stable and large filtrationsetup preferably an sump and maybe an showerfilter. They are jumpers so you will also need to have heavy lids on the tank

2. It is okey with multiple arowanas if the tank is large enough. But as stated they need an really large tank.

3. You can keep other fish with arowanas as long as they dont fit in its mouth. As for parrots they are a bunch of *******s of a fish.

4. Substrate on the bottom is up to you what you find pleasing to look at. I tend to go to more of barebottomtanks in my fishrooms.

Thanks a lot. I can get a 200cm tank. 100 cm you mean the height or the width? I decided if I house one I ll keep it a arowana only tank.

Where do you live? Asian arowanas are banned in a few places.
Id say almost anywhere except for usa its legal to own an asian arowana. :nilly:
The majority of the members here are in the us.
Well that is true. But that dont answers his questions.
if hes using litres for water volume... id bet hes not in the u.s....

I am not from US. I am from UAE and Asian arowanas are legal here.

I suggest a much bigger tank than you're suggesting. More like 500 gallons not liters.
To answer one of the questuons not full answered yet. Arowana are usually very skittish and tend to bolt causing themselves injury if there is decor and sometimes just on the tank itself. One of the reasons it's better to be only fish in the tank. As kind of stated above Asian aro are smaller then silvers and black. Asian and jardini are about them same size and have simular tank size requirements. But still need massive tanks.

Thanks dear. I am thinking about a 2 metere long tank but not sure what is the recomended width and height. I am actually not sure about strictly going for an arowana because I am not an expert fish keeper. I had mbunas, blood parrots, oscars small size, ghost knives small and fish like that I kept before and rehomed them when they started to overgrown. I don't know if its a good idea to start with an Arowana as a first monster fish.

Well an arowana isnt much harder to keep then any other fish. It all comes down to you wc schedule and how big of a tank you will get. An 200x100x80cm tank lengthxwidthxhight will work for one asian arowana but bigger is always better. If you are able to get an tank 250x130x80 then you have an perfect tank IMHO.

Thanks for the reply dear. How about a like 50 to 60 cm width? Will that be ok?

Edit: I can get a used tank someone is selling but the dimensions are. 150 cm length × 45 cm Width and 60 cm height. Could it be ok to accommodate a arowana? Or is it too small and I strictly need a 200 length tank?

That tank is far from enough to keep an arowana. They need at least 100 width and 200 length.

Definitely go as big as possible, they are hefty fish and the bigger you make your tank the better it'll be for the fish in the long run. :)

Welcome to the MFK! What is the absolute biggest tank you can afford, find, and house? Let's start there.

It seems the scale of a tank that an arowana would need for life still escapes you. IMHO, I'd say a 1000 gal is a minimum for a silver arowana, African arowana, and 500 gal for Asian and perhaps the Australians. Minimum doesn't mean comfort, it means a bare adequacy. Bigger is much better. The good thing is that you can keep many, many other fish with arowana in a large enough tank. For some ideas of possible tank mates for a silver arowana, check out our video:

Thanks a lot. I wish I had such huge tank. Seems very overcrowded but this thing is huge.

You haven't answered my one and only question, mate. You don't have to, but I take notice.

Sorry about that. English is not my native language. I thought you saying me to get a as much bigger tank as possible. Actually I just measured the space and I can only put a 150 cm length tank. I may get a juvenile and give it to someone when it grows.

That is not the best mindset to have when it comes to fish. Everybody can buy a baby fish that will grow into a monster but when that baby grows up not everybody can take care of the monster. Finding someone that can handle it is not a guarantee and it is best to just not get the fish if you can not handle it.
