He’s about 5” and I noticed this about two weeks ago as a small red dot. I thought it was an injury at first, but it’s grown some. Any idea what this is?

That’s what I thought it looked like too, but it didn’t have any when I got him at 3” and he only has one.
They can regrow or "sprout" based on availability to air. Ive only read posts about it happening and some supposed reasons from knowledgeable people not just here on mfk. Is there enough room beteween the top of the tank and water surface for it to get air? Is the water well oxygenated? Are there large or predatory fish that the poly could be intimidated by to not surface? Have you seen it surface to get air?
Thanks for the great info. He has easy access to the surface and goes up for air regularly. The other fish don’t bother him and have plenty of surface agitation. I did buy him online about two months ago, maybe the conditions for regrowing the external gills were present before I got him and the process was already set in motion.
Thats possible. Most polys really don't "notice" or care about other fish unless its food so most are not intimidated by other fish. I was a thought on wetwebmedia I believe. I have never seen it in any of my polys either. But you are not the first to say it. Are you sure they have not been there the entire time? Maybe just irritated so they are red atm?
