does this pot look aquarium safe?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My concern is that pot appears to be made in China, or possibly Mexico, both countries that largely lack regulation for food safe items, let alone non food safe items. Even their glazes are not always safe, or food safe. It's not just oven fired terracotta, it has something added before or after the firing to give the antique look. I would not trust it. JMO
It's made in Mexico.

Hard to say by first glance, but if they have limestone or sandstone that's a no-no. I would do a search on the composition of black clay. Hard metals (iron, zinc, copper etc), and aluminum are to be avoided. Food safe containers can be used with no problem. Pour industrial strength vinegar on them. If they fizz, leave them OUT. Glazed pots are safe provided the glaze has no lead.
I'll try that.

Fizzing won't necessarily be a concern for you Adam. If you were keeping soft water species it might.
Central american rivers and lakes are basically contained by limestone. The buffering won't be an issue.
I've seen pots the same as that used in tanks before.
If your experimental fish is OK then you should be fine. I would give it another week
before adding more fish just as a precaution.

I have seen very similar looking pots, but not made out of pottery in Mexico - ones that were molded resin duplicates of antique pots, sold for the aquarium trade.
You may be right.
I guess it would be more sensible to be a little cautious just in case.

I would think if the sacrificial jd is OK in a week or two, they should be fine.

I’m just going to throw this out there for you to consider.

The pot is made in Mexico (so most likely made out of local Mexican clays) Jack Dempsey are from Mexico.....so whatever the pot is made of probably wouldn’t have any affect on the Jack Dempsey as it would probably be found in or near the jack Dempsey’s water in Mexico.

Maybe be more cautious when you add different species of fish that are not from Mexico.

Edit: also by adding clays from Mexico to the Jack Dempsey’s tank you might be unknowingly adding trace amounts of minerals etc that benefit your Jack Dempsey...so your jacks decor is more natural than most people who keep jack Dempsey’s on this site :-) (myself included)

The pot isn't resin. Might be hard to tell from a picture, but it's 100% a clay pot. I'm going to leave it for now, maybe add a second. Not sure if they're staying long term, but I like them for now.
