image.jpg Hi recently purchased a pacu he's about 8inches ATM and I know he will grow large, recently seen the red hooks and there very similar, any ideas would be helpfull, pacu or red hook?

Also what is best recommended to feed them have pellets and have been feeding him fresh veg image.jpg

[Old post. For completeness and correctness]
Specimen shown is NOT a Pacu.
It is a female Metynnis maculatus.
The adipose fin of pacu is small. The large adipose in photo clearly belongs to a Metynnis.

Idk looks like a pacu to me homey. Never seen an 8" spotted SD.

I have not either. But estimates vary widely.
I have found myself mis-estimating my fish' sizes so often that now I choose to include a scale for my own sanity. [see picture attached of my female Metynnis maculatus (3 views), which looks rather similar to the specimen in the photo posted above. The second pic shows both male and female + scale]
With "...about 8 inches", but no direct point of reference, we have no idea of the actual size of the fish. Interestingly the parrot cichlid next to it suggests that it may beSilverDollars_29May2019_JILL_M.maculatusCOMP.jpg less than the stated 8 inches.
Regardless, a pacu cannot have that adipose fin.
But it is all cool among friends.

I initially thought the adipose and dorsal were just shredded a bit but it seems you may be correct.

I took a closer look, from what i could tell from the picture im seeing 17-18 dorsal rays. Isnt that too many for an SD?

All in all though, it does look spot on with the pictures of your presumably female maculatus. I'll concede youre most likely correct on this ID. Thanks for the learnin.

We keep learning everyday, friend. And you are very much correct in referring to them as presumably maculatus. We certainly are not sure. Cheers!
