Unfortunately hybrids abound in the African cichlid hobby, which is why I always try to use proper Latin names, and only ever bought from trusted sources.
And that makes sense now, because as I stated in my initial comment if that was a pure S. fryeri, even a sub dominant male fryeri would be showing at least some color at that size.
