Ordering New 440/480 any advice?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’ve got two locations it could go, ones an exterior wall, other is not.

Exterior wall I can easily make a drain and tie it into storm water.

the interior site little more tricky, but also there’s water line closer there and more applicable for some auto top off water change system....

Are folks with 600g tanks doing water changes manually?

Manually, as in pythons or five gallon buckets? or just the process of removing water and adding water back to the tank? On our 300 gallon tank we open and close valves to dump water and to refill the tank. I plan on doing something similar with the big tank system except we won't have a holding tank to refill the main tank, but have hot/cold water lines to the sump and 2' above the main tank. 1570888485173.png

Here's praying this is the year you get your big tank online with a nice build thread!

I have a hot / cold mixed line putting out 80degree water. Use a python currently. The Interior wall is where the cat tree is, exterior is where two tanks currently are.

there is plumbing by interior wall,

I’ve seen folks using ice machine rigid water line for drip system. This could be ran to exterior wall location with out extreme difficulty or lots of Sheetrock cutting .

Looks like American Aquarium’s or Fish Tanks Direct.

I think American Aquarium’s uses thicker acrylic vs fish tank direct.

Hence the 440/480 difference...

8’x4’x2’

Black background vs clear, I use that roll background on other tanks, if I keep it clear maybe more versatility down the line.

6’ sump / gonna buy stand black

Types of overflow placement?

Kind of looking for do’s and don’ts when ordering tank.... or things to add during building process...

No stock list yet, only RTC or 2 P bass....

Planted probably, 600#’s of plant substrate?

Any 2 cents are welcome....

Cheers!

I have done a ton of research into tank makers in both the US and Canada. Got in touch with pretty much every well known one that I could find. Learned a lot in the process of what to stay away from and what subtleties to watch out for. What you will see, is some places are okay with using thinner acrylic and some others are not. My advice would be to stay far away from the ones that are okay with using thinner sheets as you really want to use thicker acrylic in the bigger tanks. I know you already know this but just thought it should be said. If American is using thicker acrylic I would go with them just on that fact alone. Using thinner acrylic allows the company and you to a certain degree to save money but any tank maker worth his salt would not take a risk. And there is a risk in using thinner acrylic. How thick are the sheets anyway from each company?

Edit:

Reading into this some more and it looks like a lot of people are having issues with American. What I would do is keep looking into other companies if you can that still do thicker sheets. As I said before, I wouldn't trust a company that would be willing to use thinner sheets on a big tank like this. They either don't have enough experience in the business to know better or don't care enough about the customer to recommend thicker acrylic. A lot of times you will see these companies tell you over and over again that thinner is okay that it would be fine etc etc etc. They are just trying to make a sale. Because if the other companies are using thicker acrylic at an obvious higher price, and a newbie comes onto the scene and compares prices, who do you think they are going to go with?
