I recently traded some fish from my old 125 and got this beautiful Jack Dempsey but I'm trying to figure out the sex. Does this look like a female to you guys?

Also, depending on the sex I'm considering adding another Jack to have a pair or maybe something else to go with it?

Female jack Dempsey for sure.
Awesome thank you.

Is there any other ways of identifying sex aside from the gill specs? I kind of have an idea of what to look for there but I've seen a few that I would have definitely gotten wrong.

Also will a breeding pair be good in a 125 for life?

I currently only have two convicts (which I might be selling), 5 silverdollars and a rainbowshark.

Some people say the pointed fins can indicate male but I find in older females they have pointed fins as well.

I would say in your female besides the beard the lack of body spangles is a clue.

I also think your convicts are fine with the JDs in the 125 for life.

I keep 2 jacks and 4 Honduran red points in a 90g with some random community fish.

Your female has nice colours in the fins!!
I find getting a male easier than picking a female. Males should (not always) be the boss in the sellers tank, up front, and chasing the others. If you spend some time watching the sellers tank you can usually pick a male.

Thank you for the info^^^

I was able to find what I think is a male Jack - but he is much smaller than the female.

I'm hoping it works out. So far they seem to have clicked and follow each other in the tank.

He is a good looking fish. I think you picked a male as well.

Something to be cautious of, and I dont mean to try to scare you. But his stomach looks a little concave so he might just be hungry and need food but if you do not see an improvement or he refuses to eat you might want to consider treating him for internal parasites.

Thank you!

I did notice that, I tried to out in some pellets but he did not seem interested. Will definitely keep an eye on it.

Would adding salt be beneficial with this or should I look into an actual med to be safe?

I don’t usually tell people what they should treat fish with. I haven’t used aquarium salt for things.

For new fish I always treat with prazipro and metroplex if they are not eating.
