I’m new to the hobby and I’ve recently bought a 120 gallon tank I’ve been looking into buying a red wolf since they are less aggressive than their relatives what would be some good tank mate possibilities and are cichlids and or rope fish a good idea with the red wolf

I'm no expert on wolf fish but I don't think rope fish would be a good fit as they would be extremely vulnerable due to their build. Medium cichlids or upper water fish would be more ideal :)

Less aggressive doesn't mean entirely placid. They are still territorial and can become aggressive to other tankmates.
Even as a relatively small fish, they can get to 10" with very capable teeth.
Small tetras work, but eventually can be picked off.
Cichlids, think geophagus as they aren't too dominant, but can hold their own still.
Larger bichir might work, such as congicus.

However, there isn't a blanket list of what will and won't work. Each fish is different. You might ouck out and get a very placid animal, just try to provide optimal coverage and hiding spots.

I’m working on getting more cover so far I have two 4”oscars and like a 5” bircher and a 4” geo also just got two gold stripe pike is what I was told they are called I bought a small red wolf probably 3-4” but the lfs is holding it till this weekend because it has ick and I didn’t want to bring it into my tank since I don’t have a quarantine set up

Yeah I love how they look I thought maybe if I get one big enough it would be okay maybe think it’s like a snake lol but I’d be sad to loose em if I got em so I kinda scrapped that idea along with the African butterfly I when I got the Oscar
