My LFS has these at about 5 inches long, and was wondering if they were pure or hybrids as I've seen many Synspilum hybrids online. Thanks a bunch.

They look like hybrids to me.
Doesn’t seem to be Hartwegi as they Should have an overbite characteristic of hartwegi

There not synspilum, look more like vieja hartwegi
I've seen pure hartwegi before, these don't look like hartwegi. They don't have the overbite and the colour's a bit off.

Yea, that was what I suspected. Any idea what they're mixed with?
Agreed, they don't seem to be hartwegi

LOL, you need to ask if there pure synspilum/melanura or not when it's pretty obvious but know all about hartwegi?

My LFS brought in hartwegi on various occasions from babies to 5 inchers and they have a pretty prominent overbite which these don't.
On the other hand, they never had Synspilum before and they kinda looked off but not to the extent that I could be certain they were hybrids.
I'm aware that synspilum can be pretty hard to ID due to the various collection points and just wanted opinions on the possible parentage of the fishes in the photos.
If they are indeed hybrids, wouldn't it be better to inform the LFS that they are carrying hybrids instead of labelling them "red headed Vieja" which has been one the common names for V. Melanura/Synspilum?

Red head Vieja doesn't really mean any one particular species, there are many Vieja that could be called red heads.
Any time a seller doesn't use the proper scientific name, I suspect hybrid.
And because there are so many mutts being peoduced today, there is no ways to nail down what is what, or what is mixed with what.
Below V. bifasciatta, could easily be (generically) called a red head.

While Duane is correct, generally speaking any fish that I have seen over the years listed as "red headed Vieja" has been farm bred V. Melanura/Synspilum. Red Head Cichlid /Vieja or Synspilum is a very common old school name still used in the trade. Not the LFS's fault, they are simply using the name used by the wholesaler that supplies the fish.
