Hello,

This is my first post to the MFK website, as I have been browsing for quite some time!

I have two 55 Gallon tanks in my room, and a small 3.5 gallon planted betta tank. In one of my 55's I have about an 8" red texas that is rather aggressive, and Im in search of finding something that will stand up to him and be a good tank mate.

in the tank with him right now, there is a 4-5" black convict that was the fish that started it all and was the beginning to the love of the hobby for me. Aside from my black convict, there's a synodontis and 6 giant danios.

I'd like to hear someone's opinions on what you think would be a good tankmate to keep with my red texas!

If this post gains some traction, Ill try to post some pics a little bit later!

Thank you for any feedback that will be given :)

Welcome to MFK.
Would like to see the pics!
Red Texas and flowerhorn type hybrid are notoriously aggressive.
At eight inches, and it will probably grow a little more, I would recommend letting it have the 55 to itself.
I believe that adding another fish will just cause you some headache and your tank will be overstocked.

One of the reasons that I was hoping to get another bigger fish was for the fact that the Texas beats on my catfish a pretty good amount and will immediately go after the convict when it sees it. I have made quite a large cavern for the convict out of texas holey rock so that he always has a place to hide!

Thanks for the replies!

Tank is fully stocked imo. If it were me, I'd keep the texas alone in one tank, and work on a semi-aggressive community in the other tank with the con, syno, and danios.

I posted a few pics of my red texas. In my other 55 I have a green texas, a green terror, 6 danios , and a syno! That tank seems to work rather well and they all get along!

If I were to do anything it would be move the other fish and let this beast have his own tank.
nice looking fish btw!

Thanks so much!

You recommend moving my convict to the other tank then?
The green texas that I have in the other tank and the green terror are both around 4-5 inches!

If these are more mellow and closer to the convict in size, I believe I would.
Especially if this beast is chasing him to his hide a lot.
It’s only a matter of time before he gets caught out.
I would guess that this fish is way more agro than the others.
Typical hybrid are total terrors. Glass bangers.
Does he ever take a go at you?

Pretty much any time that my hands are in the tank hes coming for them lol

He used to be pretty afraid of me whenever i was rooting around and just the other day he latched onto my hand for the first time...

I was quite surprised to be honest hahaha!

Im only afraid of my convict picking on the other two, I think that he would be a lot more aggressive. The green texas in my other tank is a female I believe, how do you think the red texas would respond to having that in the tank with him ?
