Dorado or Brycon? ID check, help needed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It does look like a dorado.

This guy is kinda curious. I'd like to see better pictures of him, as the shape of his tail makes it look quite a bit like Salminus affinis.

With the quality of the pics though, incihld easily be wrong in this.

His top fins are developing a tinge of red, its clearly a male, just do not know which of the 4 species of dorado

Good pics.

That guy does look like the typical farmed golden dorado hybrid that we get in the hobby. He'll color up nicely as he gets some size to him.

Are you referring to the Franciscanus?

No.

Dorados were imported into Brazil and farmed as a game fish then stocked in various rivers. This was done before the discovery of fraciscanus, and the species were mixed. Evidently most of what we have in the hobby now are the farmed hybrids. True wc brasiliensis are fairly rare, and true wc fraciscanus are exceptionally rare.

I need to update the sticky.

This fish looks weird to me..... Something bout the size of the eye maybe? Not sure how many people out there have multiple species of Dorado swimming in the same tank but this guy doesn't look like anything I have at least at the size it's currently at.

To me it looks like a Frankie/Brassie crossed with a Dentex..... lol. The head shape to me looks Bryconish.

Will be a very interesting one to watch grow......

Good observation sir.

This guy looks like he's a tiny fella, 2" or so. I took the eyes and odd proportions to be displaying neonate morphology. Have you had any that small?

JoshuaLow JoshuaLow how big is this guy?
